It's a twofer: prime position, big hitter.

But, that's rare.

The physical punishment catcher's take could keep him on the DL so often...he won't be able to use those hitting skills.

I say move him to first most of the time, and keep Kelly Shoppach and hope to trade him when (if?) Carlos Santana is ready to take over behind the plate.

Tim, AkronTimhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11113773741939053170noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11805401.post-71862927155137919922008-12-18T12:43:00.000-05:002008-12-18T12:43:00.000-05:00Nathan, I think that the the Valbuena acquisition ...Nathan,
I think that the the Valbuena acquisition precludes them from going after a long-term solution at 2B like Johnson (who will likely stay in ATL now that Furcal's a Dodger again) or Hudson. For 2B, a short-term fix, with very little amount of cash being committed looks to be the direction that they may go.

As for the MOR starter, K-Tribe, Anthony Castrovince identified the Marlins, Reds, and Astros as three teams that might be looking for an inexpensive option at catcher this off-season, which should have Indians’ fans familiarizing themselves with the likes of Ricky Nolasco, Josh Johnson, and Wandy Rodriguez (or maybe even a, gulp, Aaron Harang) if the Indians use their biggest chip to net the biggest return – a young, established, under-club-control starter.

Spills,
I need to get something going on that Wrigley trip as it WILL happen, it's just a matter of logistics now.Paul Cousineauhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03490622970961409253noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11805401.post-47625835697266732882008-12-18T10:11:00.000-05:002008-12-18T10:11:00.000-05:00What are the teams that have a need for catching d...What are the teams that have a need for catching depth (highlighting a package deal) that would be willing to deal a middle of the rotation starter, that would meet the Tribe's fiscal contractual constraints?

It seems like Shoppach, packaged with a few younger depth options, as you discussed, is the only scenario a team would deal a legit middle of the rotation guy.

Anyway I would love to know what you think.KonstrucktaTribehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14525965632642358024noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11805401.post-80687091369687032342008-12-18T00:52:00.000-05:002008-12-18T00:52:00.000-05:00Another great post Pauly. PatMc over at beacon almost always worth a read for some Browns coverage (with the other side of the almost being reached with Ken Doll taking over starting duties), but you guys seem to be the only ones keeping my attention when it comes to Cleveland professional sports.

Btw, I just moved to Wrigleyville, and am most definitely organizing some kind of Tribe endeavor this summer.Spillshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08413824903442574052noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11805401.post-67141800332595647142008-12-18T00:31:00.000-05:002008-12-18T00:31:00.000-05:00Well in the spirit of the article what would you t...Well in the spirit of the article what would you think of the addition of Kelly Johnson who is rumored to be available in a trade with the braves?

Should there be any consideration given to thoughts of Orlando Cabrera. I know he is a clubhouse cancer, or at least from what I have heard, yet his numbers seem to be hard to ignore, regardless of the fact that he was offered arbitration and the Indians would lose a draft pick. I will say that he is far from the type of character guy that the Indians are usually interested in. They did bring back Lofton though. Something to think about.

Also, I may be dreaming, but it would be wonderful to see Orlando Hudson fail to get a long term deal of his liking, and for him to fall to the tribe on a richly incentive laden one year deal. Just a few thoughts.Passport to Excellencehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10757388022658026835noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11805401.post-10301196569120875352008-12-18T00:19:00.000-05:002008-12-18T00:19:00.000-05:00This is why you have to love baseball. The money yo...This is why you have to love baseball.

The money you are spending is very real and since there is no salary cap, teams without a lot of money have to be constantly creative to find players making the league minimum like you described.

It adds a different wrinkle to every move teams make and it has made the MLB off-season the most fascinating off-season in all of sports.

If you had written this column about finding cheaper ways of developing players and assembling teams in the NFL, it would have been about 11 words
"Draft athletes.
