Thank you for that well-reasoned response...Karloso,
Thank you for that well-reasoned response as you're obviously not simply among the rabble-rousers on this topic.

The Lindbergh piece was one that did catch my eye as well last month and the one thing that stood out to me was his research into how many MiLB PA had been accumulated by the rookies for each team prior to their call-up. Surprisingly, the Indians had the 4th lowest average MiLB PA for their rookies when they were promoted between 2005 and 2009. Interestingly, the Twins (of all teams) are, as Lindbergh says, "roughly 200 more than the next-highest organization (the Angels) and a full season’s worth of action above average." I'm not sure how much can be gleaned from that, but for as much credit as the Twins get and for as much grief as the Indians get, there is something noteworthy there.

There's no great answer as to whether Chisenhall is ready, but I think enough red flags still exist that I'm skeptical of his readiness to come to MLB and, more importantly, stay in MLB that I'd rather see him force his way into Cleveland on the strength of 200 AAA PA. The Chiz is a nice prospect, not Pujolsian, and he's still remarkably young for his level of advancement. Let's finish him off in AAA while gaining that extra year of control while finding something out about Donald (assuming health) in the process.

I realize the frustration of being sold "hope" and "the future" ad nauseum, particularly how things fell apart as quickly as they did in 2008 and 2009. Unfortunately, I think that a lot of the hopes that things will turn around quicker than they probably will in the next few years have been foisted upon the shoulders of Chisenhall this Spring.Paul Cousineauhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03490622970961409253noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11805401.post-87940609013735612042011-03-15T11:25:14.962-04:002011-03-15T11:25:14.962-04:00Dear Paul,
Let me begin by saying that I very much...Dear Paul,
Let me begin by saying that I very much enjoy your posts and I look forward to them each week. For the fun of it, I am posing the alternate viewpoint to your position.

I have been an Indians fan since 1955 and deferring for the future simply has not worked to this point. An argument based on strategy rather than baseball talent belies the sense of your position. Putting aside strategy, if faced with the same circumstance (i.e., Donald is injured and can’t play and Chis is tearing the cover off the ball), would you not advocate giving Chis a shot at 3rd base now?

Are you aware of any data that suggests what the ideal minor league time that is required for a prospect? Ben Lindbergh, in his interesting piece Overthinking It - Promoting Prospects, in Baseball Prospectus on February 22, 2011, highlights the variability in time that prospects spend in the minors among different clubs. He remarks: -- This should be a scientific process, but there’s an element of art to it; in addition to deciding whether a player’s on-field performance merits a ticket to a higher level, the arbiters of a minor leaguer’s fate must also judge whether he has the necessary maturity to take a bigger stage in stride, and whether his physical gifts are such that a stiffer challenge might unlock his potential, rather than bury it beneath a residue of self-defeat. -- He later refers to Pujols as the poster boy for individualizing decisions. Will the 200 extra PA that Chis may have before June make the difference in terms of success likelihood in the majors?

As to what happens 5 years from now, I would make the case that good organizations always find talent and 5 years is a long time to find another 3rd baseman if Chis bolts. I am simply tired of delaying gratification unless it absolutely makes sense from a baseball talent point of view and not just from a strategic viewpoint.

With the current MLB system in place, which do you take?

I take giving the Indians the best shot to win now. If Chis gives the Indians the best shot to win, he should play. Full stop. Any other decision fosters a losing mentality and a let’s wait until next year in perpetuity mindset.
Thanks,
Karlosokarlosohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15483217040012748295noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11805401.post-55561004732138672011-03-15T08:49:27.594-04:002011-03-15T08:49:27.594-04:00The 28-year-old Chiz in 2017, when he will also be...The 28-year-old Chiz in 2017, when he will also be on the team with more mature and experienced Jason Kipnis, Nick Weglarz, Nick Pomeranz, Alex White and more.Halifaxhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16712626480683595819noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11805401.post-55177096061636743342011-03-14T16:02:25.403-04:002011-03-14T16:02:25.403-04:00Karloso,

The Indians have to stop with this forever defer-winning-for-the-future mindset. This mindset to the other members of the team and to the fans shifts the focus from winning to strategizing (ineffectively I might add). If the Indians scouting is effective, then in the next 6 years we should be able to identify another bonafide 3rd baseman prospect and losing Chis would be less important; or Chis might be signed to a long-term contract. If the scouting sucks, then the Indians will have no chance any way.
KarlosoAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17797669333011909663noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11805401.post-83755821517987788702011-03-14T09:38:46.880-04:002011-03-14T09:38:46.880-04:00Great article!
