He won't make the playoffs with the Mets and they clearly are in no shape to re-sign him. He could come play meaningful (hopefully) baseball into October with a talented (albeit young) team and increase his value for when he hits the open market. If you're ...No, that wouldn't get it done. If you're leery of Tomlin's success and Buck is a 27-year-old that's bounced around AAA and MLB this year, they have little to no value for an Astros team that will be looking for BIG names for Pence.

It would take at least one of the Chiz/Kipnis/Pomz/White column and probably a decent prospect (better and further along than Washington) to even get the Astros interested.

Remember, Pence isn't a FA after this year and if the Astros are going to trade the "Face of their Franchise", there's no way that a couple of middling MLB players and a prospect as far away as Washington (who has a .651 OPS in Lake County) emit much more than laughs from Houston.Paul Cousineauhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03490622970961409253noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11805401.post-89564174129184285852011-07-19T09:21:25.572-04:002011-07-19T09:21:25.572-04:00and yes, that would severely hamper our rotation f...and yes, that would severely hamper our rotation for this year. If Huff can keep his head out of his rear end it sure would be nice to have two lefties in the rotation (Pomeranz) in the future.

Houston would want a young, cheap, under club control MLB-ready arm (Tomlin), a high-end prospect (Washington) and an OF to replace Pence (Buck).

Would that get it done? Not to take anything away from the offense, but Carmona and Talbot combine to have an ERA of 5.97 basically taking up 40% of the rotation for most of the year.

The ERA for the Indians' staff if you exclude Carmona and Talbot is 3.46. I know you can't just "exclude" certain players, but the top 3 and the bullpen have gotten this team through some offensive dry spells. Our staff ERA is higher than league average (4.05 for the Tribe vs 3.88 for the AL), but we're scoring more per game than the average (4.39 Indians, 4.29 AL). Additionally, Progressive isn't a real hitters' park. I think our lineup deserves more credit. Plus, a bigger issue with Pence is that I can't remember the last time the Astros did the right thing and blew up an obviously underperforming team to live to fight another day.

It's true that they're getting new ownership that could change that path, but it would be an AWFULLY hard sell in that market for a new owner to come in and sell off everything (which they should do) with a target date of contention a couple of years away. They won't and that's why the Astros are stuck in this awful cycle in which they never contend, but just have a couple of good players that aren't good enough to carry a team or have any decent parts around them.

Maybe things change in Houston, but I don't think Pence gets moved with new ownership coming in.

As for Carlos, that K number is surprising, but I think he's a ways away from a TTO player.Paul Cousineauhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03490622970961409253noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11805401.post-6071942134816377632011-07-18T19:05:01.427-04:002011-07-18T19:05:01.427-04:00So, does the latest injury to Sizemore make us a p...So, does the latest injury to Sizemore make us a player for Pence?
