Both are specimens (last I read Weglarz, who is 20, weighs in at 6'3"/230. Mills is a man as well). Cain seems to fall a bit more toward the sppedy end of the spectrum with some decent pop as well, but haven't read a whole lot on him. Plus, I also get the feeling he's not on the list.

Michael Brantley (OF) - .325/4/35/25 SB at AA

Compares to:

Trevor Crowe (OF) - .325/4/26/9 SB

From all I've gathered Brantley is a speedy leadoff guy with an over .400 OBP. Would be a nice fit moving Grady back to the 3-hole.

My whole take on it is that I think Green would be the better player, but the needs in the system point to Brantley. It depends on their development and also on Trevor Crowe, who could be that guy but is 25 years old and on currently on the DL. The Indians also have another couple of players coming in the corner IF mold in Akron with Wes Hodges and Stephen Head.

Wes Hodges (3B) - .315/10/72
Stephen Head (1B) - .311/7/32

Hodges looks like the real deal, and don't forget about LaPorta, who is really a 1B. But if LaPorta can play LF, and Mills becomes the 1B with Hodges filling the other corner, the real possibility could be, just as people have hinted, Green at 2B.Halifaxhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16712626480683595819noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11805401.post-35642836966058890082008-07-10T15:52:00.000-04:002008-07-10T15:52:00.000-04:00Watching TV last night with my wife. LaPoerta alone, if he pans out the way he looks like he might, would be good return for a lame duck pitcher in a lost half-season, and the young hurler and PTBNL make the trade look excellent to me.

PS -- Richie Sexson just got released by the Mariners. If I'm Shapiro I'm calling his agent pronto. He'll upgrade the defense if nothing else, and no matter how poorly he hits he'll be more effective at DH & 1B than what we're trotting out there right now.Halifaxhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16712626480683595819noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11805401.post-48982032594117929712008-07-10T13:59:00.000-04:002008-07-10T13:59:00.000-04:00tyler, Crisp is considered one of the top defensiv...tyler, Crisp is considered one of the top defensive OF in the game. Sure, he was a nice one-two ... against right-handers. Against lefties, he was a hair above putrid, and that was before Grady's power had come in. For a "speedy LF with a little pop," he only stole 15 bases in 2005. It's not useless, but it's hardly a game-changing threat on the basepaths. And it bears mentioning, he was just a little lucky -- I think his subsequent performance in Boston bears that out. Take all that together with a guy who was really not that great of an outfielder, and I don't think Crisp really deserves to be missed. He was traded at peak value, exactly the sort of move we should be lauding the front office for making.

Halifax, I disagree strongly with Sheehan. We could have waited longer, and possibly received marginally more value from one of the other guys involved. I don't see how that balances out against the risks of Sabathia getting hurt, or Milwaukee imploding and falling out of the race. LaPorta was the single best talent available, and he and Green or Brantley fit the needs of the organization perfectly. Waiting was at least as likely to hurt, and hurt very very badly, as to help.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11805401.post-41620035649500456662008-07-09T23:46:00.000-04:002008-07-09T23:46:00.000-04:00i was two years old the last time we lost 10 in a ...i was two years old the last time we lost 10 in a row. oh, to be two again.t-bonehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07557582144953901789noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11805401.post-69830470594261767842008-07-09T22:15:00.000-04:002008-07-09T22:15:00.000-04:00that walk off loss does it for me. ive held onto h...that walk off loss does it for me. ive held onto hope for this long. but im done. piss on em. nothing but a trainwreck.csusihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02575419830013173006noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11805401.post-48082942175206133682008-07-09T11:49:00.000-04:002008-07-09T11:49:00.000-04:00Not a glowing endorsement for the Tribe from Baseb...Not a glowing endorsement for the Tribe from Baseball Prospectus:

http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=7770Halifaxhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16712626480683595819noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11805401.post-24731023684291204082008-07-09T11:40:00.000-04:002008-07-09T11:40:00.000-04:00Here's a wrap of the trade on Baseball America:htt...Here's a wrap of the trade on Baseball America:

http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/majors/trade-central/2008/266448.html

It really says little more than we've all read up to this point. In fact, I would like to believe that the Indians are thinking it's somewhat important that he be able to handle LF at the major league level, just based on other players in the pipeline...

Although you mentioned Jordan Brown in the 1B mix, for some reason he's never been on my prospect radar, regardless of the MVP awards he's won... always struck me as having waaaaay too little power to inhabit 1B.... and as for Garko, well, his ship is close to sailing in my book...

I thought there were two guys that you failed to mention in that mix that should be in there... Beau Mills and Victor Martinez.... After his big doubleheader earlier this week, Mills is now OPSing around .850 and is playing 1B... it's not unreasonable to expect him to start next season at Akron, where he could be in the mix by 2010... As for Martinez, he's getting to the point where I think the team has to think about, from a standpoint of extending his productive seasons, of possibly easing his burdens behind the plate... so the only other place he can play is 1B.. plus that gets Shoppach's bat in the lineup, and with the team's dearth of power, that's not all bad...

So basically, my first reaction to the trade was that if LaPorta could just be average in LF (think Pat Burrell, who he's sometimes compared to offensively), then that would be good, because his bat will more than make up for it... I just think this team has loaded up too much in recent years on the 1B/DH types, so having LaPorta in the OF would seem to be a key... although, if Brantley is the PTBNL in the deal (which I would prefer if simply to inject some much-needed athleticism into the system), and he projects to be a LF, then I guess LaPorta has to pretty much be a 1b....Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06189569045008909162noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11805401.post-61026857762940239952008-07-08T22:49:00.000-04:002008-07-08T22:49:00.000-04:00Just checked the box score from Milwaukee...weird....Just checked the box score from Milwaukee...weird...CC left with the lead and the bullpen is holding and the offense just scored 3 more runs for him.... Oh wait, that was Coco Crisp! I remember the Grady-Coco 1-2 punch was pretty exciting and worked fairly well. For a team that lacks much speed (other than Grady) I think a quick LF to complement Sizemore at the top of the order would be nice. Especially if we can reignite the power out of our DH, C, and 1b positions that were there in years past. This team can do worse than another Coco.Ryanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06469576697598672216noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11805401.post-47436565195198579742008-07-08T21:01:00.000-04:002008-07-08T21:01:00.000-04:00Tom Servo,Forgot about Rodriguez, though you're pr...Tom Servo,
Forgot about Rodriguez, though you're probably right. He hasn't separated himself from the pack the way that Hodges has, but he's still young.

I read the "average arm" thing from this morning's PD, which had a piece from the Huntsville Stars' beat writer (because, apparently, nobody in the PD sports department could put a story together in time on LaPorta) that said, "Prince Fielder was blocking LaPorta's path at first base, but it wouldn't be surprising to see him there or at designated hitter in Cleveland. If he sticks around in the outfield, one scout projects him to be in left because of average arm strength."

I can't figure out links, so here's the unlinked html - http://blog.cleveland.com/sports/2008/07/laporta_to_bring_lumber_to_ind.html

As for Chootierrez, Frank's troubles at the plate have been just as disconcerting as Choo's struggles in the field. I hope that one of them steps up or at least they can form a decent platoon, but I'm getting more skeptical every day.

I have the same feeling about Gutz that you do about Benny, though I KNOW that Frank's ceiling is miles above Francisco's.

The DiaBride is feeling some disappointment (I believe her comment was that CC was among her "Top 10"), though it is tempered by the fact that he's going to Milwaukee. My in-laws are tip-toeing around the issue or calling with condolences like a family member of mine just died.

While I feel like I've girded myself for this for a while, I still can't bring myself to check in on CC tonight.Paul Cousineauhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03490622970961409253noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11805401.post-51982166170977341512008-07-08T18:08:00.000-04:002008-07-08T18:08:00.000-04:00Paul, I think Josh Rodriguez plays second base as ...Paul, I think Josh Rodriguez plays second base as well. As he's our highest ranking non-Asdrubal middle infield prospect, I doubt he'll be moved off shortstop just yet, but he's got to be at least as close to making the majors as a second baseman as Goedert is.

I'm also not sure where you get that LaPorta has an average arm. He's slow, I'm sure, but he was a catcher for a while in college. We've got a lot of ways to go at first. I think LaPorta stays in the outfield if it's possible.

In the outfield, I think Frank and Choo have the best chance of making it. They're both above-average defensive replacements and pinch runners, they make a reasonable platoon, and in Frank's case, there's still a year or two for him to get awesome. Ben's passable, though I can't help but think there are organizations that fit him better than the Indians.

Last I heard, your boy Jordan's knee didn't heal up as fast as they had hoped. Obviously he was never a thunderous power hitter anyway, but with Weglarz and Mills holding their own, and LaPorta en route, his window of opportunity just got a little narrower. Here's hoping the best for him.

How's Mrs. C. taking the trade?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
