We're a small market team with a dwindling payroll and are in dire need of high upside starting pitchers, because of this we have stockpiled on high upside arms. It's almost certain that the majority of those pitching prospects will not reach their potential but the only way we will find out which ones will is if they actually get the chance to pitch in the big leagues for an extended period of time. The best way to do this is to let go of our market value contracts that are relatively expensive to the team and find out which high upside prospects pan out. Once we have developed that core group of young players we can start filling in the gaps with market value FA signings, but in the meantime all it will do is delay, or in some cases prevent, the promotion of some our prospects while adding a trivial number of wins to a lackluster total (ie: winning 75 games instead of 72 games isn't going to push us into the playoffs).

It's sad to say, but we're rebuilding. We may be able to contend in 2012 but we will not know until our young players get the chance to emerge. Once we're close we can start adding players like Westbrook as needed but right now it just eats unnecessary amounts of our limited payroll and potentially blocks prospects. Or at least that's how I see it.

PS: Paul - thanks for the link. It's nice for a few people to read my, somewhat rare, posts.Davidhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09088766043742768353noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11805401.post-41453184436665854142010-06-22T12:39:45.559-04:002010-06-22T12:39:45.559-04:00Halifax, great projections. Though the Tribe hasn't seemed compelled to overspend on free agents in these non-contending years, I suspect that they'll have to rent the kinds of 5-7 mil per year, mid-level, inning-eating veterans that David mentions in the linked SABR Tribe blog entry some time soon. In that sense, Westbrook is essentially interchangeable with a number of other options and one of those other prospects from the farm could be replaced by a FA.Ryan Weplerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07066019718655198410noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11805401.post-13007824270396733302010-06-21T14:24:11.587-04:002010-06-21T14:24:11.587-04:00Johan Pino should be at least in the conversation ...Johan Pino should be at least in the conversation for a call up if they're seriously considering a non-roster option. If we dangle him (we are) and the offers are underwhelming, sure, lets see if he'll re-sign for two or three years. But if there's a Colleti or Bavasi out there to fleece, you've got to do it.BrainOfJhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00551292924147523486noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11805401.post-60889251372156139462010-06-21T14:02:21.071-04:002010-06-21T14:02:21.071-04:00KingDiesel, Are you sure you're in the right p...KingDiesel, Are you sure you're in the right place? There are plenty more like you at Cleveland.com. Perhaps you'll be more comfortable there.

Anyway, all that said ... "Love affair with Raffy Perez?" Surely you jest. THAT is what is wrong? The season is nothing more than an audition for newbies and an extended spring training for the guys who have performed well in the past but who suck now. You still hope to win every game but I think we can both agree that this team's problem isn't the fact that Raffy Perez isn't pitching well, right? I also think you can admit that our third base coach has about as much to do with the team's failures as the Louis Isaac firing did, right? Lets try to be logical and thoughtful here.

Halifax, Totally agree on Carlos Santana. It's been getting so old to hear all this great stuff about our prospects only to have them come up and fall flat the first weeks, then spend two years being shuttled back and forth between MLB and AAA.

I'm pulling for Carrasco, I suppose, rather than Laffey. I'd like to see someone new surprise me. But I'm not encouraged by what he's shown at AAA. I'd like to see Josh Tomlin, i'd say he's earned a look. But who do you boot from the 40 man to make space for him?BrainOfJhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00551292924147523486noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11805401.post-64929702236612682010-06-21T13:57:38.461-04:002010-06-21T13:57:38.461-04:00As for the immediate future, where do you fill in ...As for the immediate future, where do you fill in the blanks for 2011?

LF -- Brantley
SS -- Cabrera
RF -- Choo
C -- Santana
1B -- LaPorta
CF -- Sizemore
DH -- Hafner
3B -- Chisenhall
2B -- Donald/Valbuena

Extra pieces/parts -- Weglarz, Goedert, Marte, Crowe, Brown, Hodges

ROTATION:

RH -- Carmona
RH -- Westbrook (almost MUST be signed)
R/L -- Masterson/Huff
RH -- Carrasco
RH -- Talbot

In the wings: Hagadone, Rondon, White. Look for White and Hagadone to contend for a rotation spot by the end of the year. These guys have the pedigree and the talent and are older, more polished prospects they WANT and need to have in there. If Rondon is healthy, he should bounce back. 2012 looks like a better year for a better rotation. See why you have to keep Carmona? Unless Toronto wants to give you Drabek...

As for Carrasco, give him a bit of time. Phil Hughes wasn't exactly lights out when he burst on the scene, now look at him. (That's on you, Shapiro, for not dealing Lee for him straight up)

Closer -- Perez, bullpen's looking mighty weak right now.Halifaxhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16712626480683595819noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11805401.post-9068098796594178402010-06-21T13:42:34.820-04:002010-06-21T13:42:34.820-04:00It's nice to see a prospect come up and do his...It's nice to see a prospect come up and do his best Evan Longoria impression rather than an Andy Marte. Santana looks like he can hit, regardless of what level he is doing it in.

As for older prospects, give Goedert a shot, they've got nothing to lose. He can obviously hit AAA pitching hard.

I don't totally agree with the Crowe assessment. No, he's not stellar in the field, nor will he hit .300. But he is fast and what impresses me about him is -- did you ever notice how he seems to get big hits with guys on? Maybe I just get lucky and happen to watch when this happens, but it seems like it does on a regular basis.

It's Carrasco Time. If one young Carlos is good, having two can only be better, right?

I see ZERO reason to deal Carmona. He's still enough of a question mark whereas they will not get equal return for what he means to their future if he does pan out. And if the Indians are serious about contending as soon as 2011, they NEED him. Who's going to pitch?Halifaxhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16712626480683595819noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11805401.post-2203129284738801392010-06-20T22:28:00.037-04:002010-06-20T22:28:00.037-04:00Great piece Couz..

This love-affair with Raffy Perez must end, and now we have Stop Sign Smith in the 3rd base box doing his best skins at the fens impersonation. I say bring up Carrasco. The kid is bored at AAA. Let's find out if he is AAAA like Laffey.kingdieselhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06324199988823868480noreply@blogger.com
