He’s bulky and a bit on the slow side, and while he has the arm for right field, he doesn’t have the range, which has limited him to left. Neal consistently does most of his damage against left-handers, which will limit him to a bench or platoon role, if not simply a long career as an up-or-down guy.

He's RH, 23, and an OF...plus The OC is no more. That they got anything for him shocks me. If Neal can be a RH 4th OF for a couple of years, it's a minor miracle.Paul Cousineauhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03490622970961409253noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11805401.post-12100193024865628872011-07-31T18:45:47.644-04:002011-07-31T18:45:47.644-04:00I will give the Indians the benifit of a doubt on ...I will give the Indians the benifit of a doubt on thid trade. But it still scares me because I just keep thinking about the Colon trade years ago. If memory serves me, Cliff Lee and Sizemore weren't even the Expos top rated prospects. Ubaldo can certainly help, unless he pitches a shutout every time, they are stikk in trouble. Just look at Bat Masterson thios year. He should be a 12-15 game winner already.Cleveland Fanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04274150358015254259noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11805401.post-91322145053053710142011-07-31T14:58:06.884-04:002011-07-31T14:58:06.884-04:00The Tribe had to give up a lot (and this should be...The Tribe had to give up a lot (and this should be a lesson to the Indians in future "sell" years--that you can make a better deal if the other guy doesn't know you're desperate to sell), but I think it's an acceptable risk, especially since I'm really not that high on White.

Essentially, they are gambling that the next two years with Jimenez as an ace (and Masterson, pitching the way he has this year, is clearly good enough to be a #2 on a championship team) is better than six years of hoping Pomeranz becomes an ace, with some of those six coming after Masterson has (presumably) gone elsewhere. And as was implied in the post, the track record of pitching prospects makes this less of a gamble than it may seem on the surface.

Obviously there's a risk, but the Indians have never made a trade like this before, not even during the "Era of Champions," so it's exciting for that reason alone. And there's also a risk in hanging on to the kids; let's not pretend there isn't. Look at it this way: what if the equivalent of Jimenez had been available in 2006, and the price for getting him would have been Adam Miller and Jeremy Sowers?Hydehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03984348525069741897noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11805401.post-79785248403670549212011-07-31T14:37:48.404-04:002011-07-31T14:37:48.404-04:00Another wonderful article, Paul. Add in Sizemore (please jesus) and Choo, and maybe not this year, but assuming the kids get incrementally better. This is a contender with a bona fide number 1 and Masterson at #2. The time is now, Tribe Fans. Enjoy the next couple years, I guarantee I will.Curbsharpenerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15839300713688282327noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11805401.post-91691581086302491982011-07-31T12:02:28.510-04:002011-07-31T12:02:28.510-04:00I am so freaking pumped that the Tribe actually we...I am so freaking pumped that the Tribe actually went balls-to-the-wall and landed themselves a new ace, who (by the way) is locked in for cheap for the next 3.5 years. I had called into WKNR about a week ago when the Matt Kemp rumors were swirling... I had a good conversation with Michael Reghi who was steadfast on the "untouchables" Pomeranz and White. My argument was that when you are trying to acquire proven all-star level talent, NO ONE should be untouchable. Certainly not prospects. We're talking bout PROSPECTS, man (tribute to Allen Iverson).

Low and behold, Chris Antonneti grabbed his gourds and dealt our prospects for a dream-come-true for this guy. LOVE Ubaldo, and cant wait to see him with a Wahoo on his hat.

IF this team is to compete, we will need pitching. Remember the 95 World Series, folks? All the bats in the world wont get you rings in October. That said, YES, we do still need hitting. Maybe Ludwick can provide some pop (although his B.A. makes me cringe). But, I think it was genious to go after a stud ace and a better gamble to have Choo come back healthy and productive, maybe Laporta comes out of his shell, and even Santana finds a way to pick up the avg...all while Brantley, Cabrera (AC only now, best wishes Orlando - hate to lose the clubhouse guy), and Hafner doing what they've done most of all season.

My point is:

1) I am jacked about this trade; screw the nay-sayers that were the same people bitching when Victor and Cliff were traded and whined about our franchise doing nothing but folding their hand every year

2) Beltran, Pence, or even Kemp arent going to get you wins on their own. Ubaldo can.

Bottom line is we WILL need to score runs - certainly more than we have been recently. But this is an awesome day to be a Tribe fan. The fact that we're buyers and not sellers, AND that we'll actually DO something with the "prospects" that we have, rather than sit on them until they become Adam Miller, Andy Marte, and Jaret Wright...is simply awesome.

GO TRIBE!Raycher33https://www.blogger.com/profile/12467446709678557753noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11805401.post-51206544429808877892011-07-31T10:41:25.070-04:002011-07-31T10:41:25.070-04:00Paul any scoop on the OF they got in return for OC...Paul any scoop on the OF they got in return for OCab?GMAChttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14408612828135813442noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11805401.post-56164028884429998082011-07-31T10:40:22.616-04:002011-07-31T10:40:22.616-04:00Time will tell with all of this. The first one that came to mind was the poker one: the deal sort of feels like that moment at a poker table when the guy sitting across from you says "aaaaaaah, the hell with it." and pushes his pile into the middle. Then you say "Call." Then you take his chips. For the purposes of this analogy, Antonetti is the guy sitting across from you.

My good man Antonetti also just went shopping at the wrong time of the year. This deal looks like the kind a desperate parent might receive if he was standing outside a Toys 'R' Us on Xmas Eve trying to buy the popular and, therefore, sold-out doll everybody's kid wants this year. "I need this for my daughter! I've got to have it! I need her to love me! I NEED THE FANS TO LOVE ME!"

The price tags for Pomz and White were likely only going to go up while that of Jimenez, and I hate to say this, is only going to go down. I live in Colorado. I don't go to a ton of Rockies games. I don't like the Rockies. I don't like their stadium. I don't like their division. I will hope Pomeranz and White, and even Gardner, have wonderful careers. I will cheer for McBride if he latches on somehow, but I will cheer as I look at their names in a box score having avoided that stadium like the plague on nights when any of those guys might be pitching.

One last thought:

Ubaldo, whose name I already hate to say, is an NL pitcher coming to the big bad AL, he has reduced velocity from his (largely, but not completely) dominant last year, and he now has a player option that formerly made him more valuable to the Rox to keep him. These are not items that should have been written down in the Pro column of Antonetti's pre-trade checklist.CLohsehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10640058765124455620noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11805401.post-30883934736415144632011-07-31T00:23:53.864-04:002011-07-31T00:23:53.864-04:00There's a difference between bold and stupid. ...There's a difference between bold and stupid. Wanna make a splash, they did? The Titanic made a splash - that's what this trade will end up being. A team that lost 7 of its last 8, mainly because they can't score, was not going to win its division, Ubaldo or no Ubaldo. The risk is too high that he's another Fausto, and White and Drew are BOTH better pitchers the next 3 years.milwaukeeTribehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15412453471476254358noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11805401.post-35886175046831104372011-07-31T00:19:32.031-04:002011-07-31T00:19:32.031-04:00If Jimenez passes the physical and stays healthy f...If Jimenez passes the physical and stays healthy for the next two years then I am happy with this deal.
