Not So Fast, My Friend

Just after I put up a post that the roster looks set, the Boston media reports that the Coco deal is done. Then, just to give it some validity, ESPN is reporting the same thing.

It still isn't clear which players are going where, but this is what it looks like:
CLE gets:
Andy Marte - 3B
Jason Michaels - OF
Guillermo Mota - RP

BOS gets:
Coco Crisp - OF

PHL gets:
Arthur Rhodes - RP

These principals could certainly change, but this is the most widely reported synopsis of the exchanges.

The naysayers will say that this is an indication that the Indians are "not going for it in 2006", but essentially you're replacing Crisp with Michaels and Rhodes with Mota while acquiring a top-flight prospect in Marte (who, incidentally, was traded for a perennial All-Star SS, straight-up, just a few months ago).

More on all of the stats and ramifications as the trades become clearer, but this is what it looks like right now.

Excellent coverage in the PD on it. Oh wait, it must be right next to the article about Modell and Voinovich. Unbelievable that the local paper completely whiffs on this.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer is a joke. This is what happens in a one news paper town, no incentive to report timely news items. We get better Cleveland news from USA Today

I hope this is true. Coco is a fan favorite because of a catchy name. If he's named "John Smith", no one cares about getting rid of him. He has a bad arm and good speed but can't use it effectively (see SB %). He's at peak value now and not much more than a decnt 4th OF.

well I hate to see coco go..but I think this may work out ok,maybe some of our ARMS in the minors will get a chance now

The Marte/Renteria deal was not stright up. The SOX had to chuck $11 Million into the deal too.

Excellent point by McClintock above. I couldn't have put it better myself.

Now it's just a matter of wading through all of the different scenarios that are being reported.

As long as it stays pretty true to what I have up, I'm OK. The name Davanon scares me.
